North Tripura district is a district of Tripura state with its administrative headquarters located at Dharmanagar town. In the year 1761, British came to this place and captured the princely state of Tripura. But, till the year 1871 the hilly territory of this place was under the rule of the Maharaja, since no agent was appointed by the British to rule over this region. After India got its independence, the North Tripura district was officially recognised as a part of the Indian union on 13th August, 1947 and next year on 9th September, an agreement was signed in order to confirm the merging of the North Tripura district in the Indian union. Tripura as a full-fledged state came into existence on 15th October, 1949. At the very beginning, Tripura was divided into three districts on 1st September 1970. Initially, the North Tripura district was functioned in the sub divisional officer's office at Kailashahar as well as in Kumarghat partly.

Geographically, the district lies at 24°03' N latitude and 92°22' E longitude. The altitude in the district is 29 m. In the year 2021, there was a total 72.73% forest area of total geographical area. The district encompasses a geographical area of 2,036 sq km. and it is bounded by Bangladesh on the North and South, Mizoram on the East and Dhalai district and Unakoti district on the West. The principal rivers in the district are Deo, Manu, Longai and Juri. The climate of the district remains pleasant throughout the year. Most of its rainfall occurs in the monsoon season. The actual rainfall in the district was 1794.3 mm in the year of 2021-22.

Administration wise, the district is divided into 3 sub-divisions namely Dharmanagar, Kailashahar and Kanchanpur. Moreover, it comprises 8 sub-districts, 7 towns and 166 villages. There are total 11 assembly constituencies in this district such as Pabiachhara, Fatikroy, Chandipur, Kailasahar, Kadamtala-Kurti, Bagbassa, Dharmanagar, Jubarajnagar, Panisagar, Pencharthal and Kanchanpur. North Tripura district is under the Lok Sabha constituency of Tripura East, which is shared with Dhalai and South Tripura districts. The administrative languages in the district are Bengali and Kokborok.

According to 2011 census the district has a population of 6,93,947 out of which 3,52,860 are males and 3,41,087 are females. The district has a sex ratio of 967 (females for every 1000 males) and child ratio of 969 (females per 1000 males). During the year 2001-2011 the population growth rate in the district was 17.44% including 16.48% were males and 18.45% were females. As per 2011 census the major religion in the district is Hindu with 73.20% of the total population. The population density in the district is 341 (persons per sq. km.). As per 2011 census the principal languages in the district are Bengali and Tripuri with 71.58% and 17.20%. In the year 2020 the number of live births in the district was 8,468 out of which 4,284 were males and 4,183 were females. In the same year the number of deaths in the district was 3,221 out of which 1,886 were males and 1,335 were females.

The economy of the district is mainly dependent on both the agricultural and industrial sectors. More than half of its population are engaged in agriculture in order to earn their livelihood. The chief agricultural products in the district are rice, cereals, jackfruits, banana, etc. Every year a huge chunk of revenue comes from the agricultural revenue comes from the agricultural products in the districts helps in its economy to a great extent. Industrially also the district is quite well developed. Some of its prominent industries are food processing, brick kilns, plastics, polymers, spun pipes, wood works, natural rubber, distilleries, handloom, handicrafts, etc. Most of its natives earn their extra income from the tea gardens.

The district is well known as an abode of several reputed educational institutions. It provides a platform for higher education. As per 2011 census the district has a literacy rate of 87.5% out of which 91.13% are males and 83.75% are females. The total literate population in the district is 5,20,402 including 2,75,646 are males and 2,44,756 are females. The total illiterate population in the district is 1,73,545 including 77,214 are males and 96,331 are females.

The district has several centres of attraction which allures many travellers from different parts of the country as well as world. Jampui Hill, an interesting tourist destination in the district is famous for its unique Orange and Tourism festival, celebrated every year in the month of November. A huge number of domestic and foreign tourists came here to participate and enjoy this festival. The view of rising and setting sun from different viewpoints in Jampui hills is the most attractive part of this place for the tourists. Udayan Buddha Vihar, situated at Pecharthal market place adjacent to National High way NH44 was established in the year 1933. There is an idol of Lord Buddha here which is made of "Osto Dhatu" 8 types of metals, 4.5 ft. height and weighs 300 Kg. Pilgrims from far off places come to this place in the time Buddha Jayanti in Buddha Purnima in the month April/May in order to offer their prayers. Some other notable places of interest in the district are Laxmi Narayan Temple, Bhagabati Mandir, Sateramia Hawar, Purano Rajbari, Bhabatarini Mandir, Rowa Wildlife Sanctuary and many more.
