About Sheopur District (Madhya Pradesh)

Sheopur district, a part of Chambal administrative division is a district of Madhya Pradesh, situated at its northern part with its administrative headquarters located at Sheopur city. Sheopur Fort in the district has no specific recorded history. But though a Jain pillar built in 1026 A.D. proves the existence of Sheopur Fort. The name Sheopur can also be found in the Gopanchal Akyan, a notable work of the famous poet of 11th century named Khadag Rai of Gwalior. During the period of King Nareshar Ajay Pal (1194-1219), he made Sheopur as his capital. In the year 1301 A.D. Alauddin Khilji had overpowered the King Hammir Dev and also captured two of his prominent forts named the Ranthambhor fort and the Sheopur fort. After sometime in 1489, the place was came under the control of Sultan Mahmood Khilji of Malwa and made it as an integrated part of the Malwa Sultanate. Later in 1542, Sher Shah Suri came to this place and he too captured the Sheopur fort. Then in 1547, the great Mughal emperor, Akbar occupied the fort. From the history of this place one thing is very clear that at that time Sheopur fort was the jewel of every King’s eyes. After India got its independence in 1947, the place of Sheopur was carved out of the Morena district and emerged as a separate district in the map of Madhya Pradesh state in the year 1998.

Geographically, the district lies at 25°67'N latitude, 76°70'E longitude and 229 m Altitude. In the year 2021, there was a total 52.13% forest area of total geographical area. The district encompasses a geographical area of 6,606 sq km and in terms of geographical area it occupies the ranks of 19th in the state and 143rd in India. It is bounded by Morena district, Gwalior district and Shivpuri district on the east and Rajasthan state on the north, south and west. Most of its rainfall occurs in the monsoon season. The actual rainfall in the district was 1611.6 mm in the year of 2021-22.

Administration wise, the district is divided into two sub divisions namely Sheopur and Vijaypur. It comprised of 5 tehsils include Sheopur, Karhal, Vijaypur, Baroda and Beerpur. There are 1 Lok Sabha seat and 2 Assembly constituencies in the district. Moreover, the district comprises 3 towns and 582 villages. The administrative language in the district is Hindi.

According to 2011 census the district has a population of 6,87,861 including 3,61,784 are males and 3,26,077 are females. The district has a sex ratio of 901 females for every 1000 males. During the year 2001-2011 the population growth rate in the district was 22.94% out of which 22.52% were males and 23.42% were females. The population density in the district is 104 persons per sq. km. In the year 2020 the number of live births in the district was 12,015 out of which 6,379 were males and 5,636 were females. In the same year the number of deaths in the district was 3,051 out of which 1,923 were males and 1,128 were females. As per 2011 census the major religion in the district is Hindu with 92.85% of the total population. According to 2001 census the principal language in the district is Hindi with 96.74%.

The economy of the district is solely based on agriculture. More than half of the population in the district are engaged in agriculture in order to earn their livelihood. The chief agricultural products in the district are wheat, mustard, bazra, etc. The nearby canals of this place are the principal source of irrigation to its agricultural fields. The adoption of the new agricultural technologies amongst the famers of the district helps to increase the production of various agricultural items. The district is scantily industrialised but some small scale industries of pipes, masks, toys, doors, stands, windows, wooden memorials, flower vases, cradle posts, etc are available in the district. Every year a huge amount of revenue comes from these industries helps in its economy to a great extent. In 2006 the Ministry of Panchayati Raj declared Sheopur as one of the country's 250 most backward districts and currently receiving funds from the Backward Regions Grant Fund Programme (BRGF). In the year 2019-20 the gross domestic product in the district was Rs. 8,46,729 lakhs at current price and Rs. 4,67,801 lakhs at constant prices in the year 2011-2012. The net domestic product in the district during the period 2019-20 was Rs. 7,94,928 lakh at current price and Rs. 4,28,273 lakh at constant prices in the year 2011-2012. The Per Capita Income or NDDP, At Factor Cost during the period 2019-20 was Rs. 1,01,247 at current price and Rs. 54,547 at constant prices in the year 2011-2012.

The district is an abode of several reputed educational institutions. It provides a platform for higher education. Some of its recognised educational institutions are Govt. Madhavrao Scindia P.G. College, Adarsh Mahavidhalaya, Sheopur Institute of Professional Studies, Shri Ganesh Mahavidhyalaya, Vinayak College, Shri Ram Institute (College), Govt. polytechnic College, Rajiv Ghandhi Memorial College, etc. As per 2011 census the literacy rate in the district is 57.43% including 69.33% are males and 44.23% are females.

The district has numerous centres of attraction which allures many travellers from different parts of the country as well world. Sheopur fort, Rani Mahal, Darbar Hall and Saharia Museum are some very beautiful historical structures in the district. Doob Kund in the district is a perfect destination for pilgrimage tourism. Once there was a city named Chambal valley in the Sheopur district and at some distance there was a river Kuno popularly known as ‘Dom’. Earlier, it was the capital of Kachhwaha Kingdom. Sangam of Rameshwar, located in the semi-circle of 'Parvati River' and 'Chambal River' is full of natural and mesmerising sceneries. Vijaypur Durg, situated at the bank of Kunari River has a fort known as 'Majhola durg', built by the King of Karoli named Vijay Singh. Kuno Wild Life Sanctuary, situated in an isolated hill in the district is sloping in all directions. This sanctuary has a great variety of fauna and flora. Some other places of interest in the district are Devari Hanuman Mandir, Sher Shah Suri Eidgah (Garden), Nimoda Shareef Dargah, Devi Panwara temple, Shironi Hanuman temple, Khhetrapal Jaini temple, etc.
