Historically, the region was founded by Sufi Saint Shaikh Farid or Baba Farid. The tomb of the Sheikh Farid is located on Talab Road. It was constructed in 1607 A.D. to keep safe the Grand Trunk Road. The region was under the control of Mughals in medieval period. It was taken over by British in the early 18th century. In 1950, the industrial area was developed here to the rehabilitate the Pakistani refugees. Once it was the part of Gurgaon district. It emerged as a separate district in the map of Haryana state in the year 1979.

Sonu Nigam, a very famous Indian playback singer who has sung a number of songs in Hindi, Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi and other languages was born on 30th July, 1972 at Faridabad town. The Government of India honored him with the prestigious National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer for his most popular song “Kal Ho Na Ho” in the year 2003. Pramod Chandila was born on 18th July, 1993. He is an Indian cricketer who plays for domestic Bengal. He has played for Ranji Trophy and Twenty 20. Rahul Dalal is also an Indian first-class player who plays for domestic Haryana cricket. Anisa Sayyed is a woman shooter. She has won two gold medals in 2010 Commonwealth Games for India, a gold medal in SAF games in 2006 and a silver medal as well in Commonwealth Games in 2014.

Geographically, the district has a total 741 sq. km. area and occupies the rank 21st in State and 607th in India on the bases of this size. It lies at 28°38'N latitude, 77°30'E longitude, 198 m altitude. In the year 2021, there was a total 10.69% forest area of total geographical area. During the summer its climate remains dry and humid. The actual rainfall in the district was 808.8 mm in the year of 2021-22.

Administration wise, the district is divided into 2 sub-districts, 3 towns and 149 villages. Hindi is its official language. In the state of Haryana with an allotted district code of 88 the district of Faridabad came into existence on 15th July, 1997 with its administrative headquarters located at Faridabad which is situated at a distance of 281 kms from the State Capital. There are 1 parliamentary and 6 assembly constituencies in the district.

Demographically, according to the 2011 census, the district has a total number of 3,53,066 households with a total of 18,09,733 comprising 9,66,110 are males and 8,43,623 are females and for the very reason it occupies the ranks of 1st in the state and 263rd in India. The density of population of the district is 2,442 persons per sq. Km. The sex ratio is pegged at 873 females per 1000 males while the child ratio stands at 843 females per 1000 males. The schedule caste population of the district is recorded as 2,23,799 including 1,19,495 are males and 1,04,304 are females. The population growth rate during the period 2001-2011 was 32.54% out of which 29.22% were males, and 36.55% were females. In the year 2020 the number of live births in the district was 46,742 out of which 24,456 were males and 22,285 were females. In the same year the number of deaths in the district was 13,356 out of which 8,591 were males and 4,765 were females. As per 2011 census the percentage of major religions practiced by the people of this region was Hindu at 87.77% and Muslim at 8.93%. According to 2011 census the principal language in the district is Hindi with 93.29%.

Economically, the district is dependent on industries primarily. Mainly industries are located on Delhi-Mathura Road. Tractors, motorcycles, switch gears, refrigerators, shoes and tyres are main products here. Henna is main agro product of the region. The GDDP or Gross District Domestic Product during the period 2005-06 was Rs. 13,12,892 lakh at Current Price and Rs. 10,02,207 lakh at Constant 1999-2000 Prices. The NDDP or Net District Domestic Product during the period 2005-06 was Rs. 11,90,150 lakh at Current Price and Rs. 9,05,658 lakh at Constant 1999-2000 Prices. The Per Capita Income or NDDP at factor cost during the period 2011-12 was Rs. 1,63,247 at Current Price 2004-2005 Prices. Faridabad has a Thermal Power Station. It is owned by Haryana Power Generation Corporation Limited.

Education wise, according to the 2011 census, the literacy rate in the district is 81.7% out of which 88.61% are males and 73.84% are females. The total literate population of the district is 12,72,739 including 7,34,940 are males and 5,37,799 are females. The district has several educational institutes including schools, colleges and polytechnics etc. There are several colleges such as Lingaya's Institute of Management & Technology, Manav Rachna College of Engineering, National Institute of Animal Welfare, National Institute of Law, National Power Training Institute (NPTI), Rai Foundation Engineering College etc. the name of the min schools of the district are Apeejay School, Aravali International School, B.N Public School, Carmel Convent School, D C Model Senior Secondary School, DAV Public School (Dayanand Anglo Vedic Public School), Ryan International School, SOS Hermann Gmeiner School, etc.

Vipul Goel is an Indian politician from the Bharatiya Janata Party. He is representing Faridabad constituency as the Member of Legislative Assembly. Krishan Pal Gurjar, an eminent Indian politician and a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party who represented the Faridabad constituency in the 16th Lok Sabha. He was served as the state minister for transport from 1996-99. At present he is serving as the Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment.

The district has several famous historical and religious tourist places to visit. These places are Anandpur Bandh (Dam), Aravalli Golf Course, Gymkhana Club, Mughal Bridge, Nahar Singh Cricket Stadium, Nahar Singh Palace, Rajhans Convention Centre, Rose Garden, Surajkund, The Progressive Farm. In the year 2020-2021 there were a total 84,348 domestic tourists and 846 foreign tourists who visited the above places. Aravalli Golf Course is under the Haryana Tourism. It was the first golf course in Faridabad, opened in 1966. The Nahar Singh Stadium was earlier known as Mayur Stadium. It is named after Indian Rebellion of 1857, Nahar Singh.
