Historically, Durg was part of 'Dakshina' or 'Southern Kosala'. As per the writing of the traveler named Hiuen Tsang, who visited Southern Kosala in the 7th Century, indicates that the district was ruled by Ashoka. Allahabad Pillar which has inscription of Samudragupta shows its existence in the 4th century. In 1818, the region came under the control of British from Marathas. British made it a part of Bhandara district. It was separated in 1857 and became a tehsil of Raipur district till the year 1906. Furthermore, the history of Durg district is like convenient inspiration and an unique mixture of oldness and modernity, culture-rite and entrepreneurship.

Saba Anjum Karim was the youngest member of the Indian women's hockey team in 2002 Commonwealth Games. In 2000, she played for India in under-18 AHF Cup. She also participated in Asian Games October, 2002, Asia Cup February, 2004 Delhi, Commonwealth Games 2002 and 2006, Junior World Cup May 2001, Buenos Aires and Australian Test Series and New Zealand Tour. She received Gundadhur sports award from the Government of Chhatisgarh. She was also awarded with Padma Shri, in 2015. Teejan Bai is a traditional art performer called Pandavani. She enacts tales from the Mahabharata, with musical accompaniments. She was awarded with Padma Shri in 1988, and Padma Bhushan in 2003, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1995. Punaram Nishad is an Indian folk musician in the art form of Pandavani. Almost 18 stories have been composed by him for Pandavani. He has received Padma Shri in 2005.

Geographically, the district has a total 8,535 sq km. and occupies the ranks 4th in State and 87th in India on the bases of this size. It lies at 21°19'N latitude, 81°28'E longitude and 317 m altitude. In the year 2021, there was a total 9.11% forest area of total geographical area. The climate of the district remains very hot and humid in the summers. Most of its rainfall occurs in the monsoon season. The actual rainfall in the district was 1328.8 mm in the year of 2021-22.

Administration wise, the district is divided into 13 sub-districts, 25 towns and 1,773 villages. Hindi is its official language. The district of Durg came into existence on 1st January, 1906 in the state of Chhattisgarh with an allotted district code of 409. Its district headquarters is located at Durg town, situated at a distance of 40 km. from the state capital.

Demographically, according to 2011 census, the district has a total number of 6,93,001 households with a total of 33,43,872 comprising 16,82,101 are males, and 16,61,771 are females. The density of population of the district is 392 (persons per sq km.). The sex ratio is pegged at 988 (females per 1000 males) while the child ratio stands at 963 (females per 1000 males). As per 2011 census the percentage of major religion practiced by the people of this region is Hindu with 93.60% of the total population. The population growth rate during the period 2001-2011 was 18.98% out of which 18.63% were males and 19.33% were females. According to the 2011 census, the percentage of the principal language of the region is Hindi at 92.69%. In the year 2020 the number of live births in the district was 27,354 out of which 14,060 were males and 13,294 were females. In the same year the number of deaths in the district was 12,369 out of which 7,310 were males and 5,058 were females.

Economically, agriculture is the prime source of income for the people of the district. The GDDP or Gross District Domestic Product during 2006-07 was Rs. 10,50,975 lakh at Current Price and Rs. 6,71,002 lakh at Constant prices during 1999-2000. The NDDP, or Net District Domestic Product during 2006-07 was Rs. 9,38,764 lakh at Current Price and Rs. 5,93,779 at Constant Prices during 1999-2000. The Per Capita Income or NDDP, at factor cost during 2006-07 was Rs. 30,211 lakh at Current Price and Rs. 31,074 lakh at Constant prices during 1999-2000.

Education wise, according to 2011 census, the literacy rate is 79.06% including 87.82% are males and 70.23% are females. The total number of literates in the district is 23,03,378 comprising 12,84,612 are males and 10,18,766 are females. The district has a number of educational institutes including schools and colleges.

The district has several famous historical and religious places to visit. These places are Shri Uwassaggaharam Parshwa Tirth (Nagpura) and Maitri Bagh. In the year 2018, there were 14,15,934 domestic tourists and 53 foreign tourists. Uwassaggaharam Parshwa Tirth is a Jain shrine. It is a place for yoga and sadhana. The Aarogyadham Nagpura situated on the bank of Holy River, Shivnath was designed by Mr. H.L. Thamrakar. It is surrounded by mesmerizing natural sceneries. The hospital is well connected by road, rail and air traffic. Sajaraut temple is another attraction in the Durg district. Deorbija is an old temple of Mata Sita. It is located in the nearby town of Bemetara.
